Augustine of Hippo composed the Confessions around 397–400 AD. The work is divided into thirteen books: the first ten recount his life from childhood through his conversion, and the last three offer a theological commentary on Genesis 1. Written in the form of a prayer addressed to God, the Confessions is among the earliest surviving autobiographies in Western literature. It has been influential across Catholic, Reformed, Lutheran, and Orthodox traditions.
