C.S. Lewis delivered these talks on BBC radio between 1941 and 1944. The book is organized into four parts: the case for Christian morality, the problem of human nature, Christian behavior, and the theological virtues. Lewis writes as a layperson addressing other laypeople, drawing on philosophy and everyday reasoning rather than technical theology. The work has been read widely across Protestant and Catholic traditions.
